The Devil: Weekly Tarotcast™ – Free Tarot Reading

XV - The Devil

The Devil is this week’s Tarotcast card. This Major Arcana tarot card symbolizes burdens and temptations. Short-sightedness and a lack of perspective enslave us through our desires. Passivity, victim consciousness and fear dominate our minds. When we realize that we are the only ones who can remove the chains which bind us, we escape from bondage. However, in its highest spiritual manifestation, this is a card of creativity. And it is also a symbol of Divine Masculine sexuality.

Kabbalah

On the Tree of Life this card travels path 26. It joins sephiroth or sphere 6, Tiphareth (Beauty) to sephiroth or sphere 8, Hod (Splendor). Its Hebrew letter is Ayin which means “eye.” Our physical “eye” is our way of seeing the world. Our other “I”, or ego, is the way we want to see ourselves and want the world to see us.

Astrology

This card is the zodiacal trump of Capricorn in which Saturn rules and Mars exalted.

In real-time astrology, the Sun is transiting Capricorn’s fellow Earth-sign Taurus. We turn our attention to practical matters. The material world – including money and other resources – is important to us through this transit. But Taurus is also sensual and attuned to the physical senses. This can be a good complement to the energy of this week’s card. Use caution around recreationals and hedonistic pursuits – otherwise, enjoy.

“Please allow me to introduce myself, I’m a man of wealth and taste…”

The Bull can also be stubborn and possessive, watch out for stifling or grasping behavior. This can apply to people, material objects or situations.

Pluto begins its retrograde transit of Capricorn on April 27th. This retrograde lasts through October 6th. Complicated, intense and heavy energy prevails. We can assess how we use (or abuse) our power. We may hide our motives and be less open and direct with others. Combined with the energy of this week’s card, check your motives and intentions.

“The devil inside…the devil inside, every single one of us the devil inside…”

On May 3rd Mercury enters Air-sign Gemini. This is one of the two signs it rules. Our minds are curious, flexible, active and energetic. We seek knowledge and communication with others.

“Set out runnin’ but I take my time, a friend of the devil is a friend of mine…”

Nervous energy can lead us to doing too many things at once. What sparks interest can fade in short order. As a result, concentration and attention span are short. Conserve and focus where you can.

But back for a moment to the Tarot perspective. The traditional concept of the Devil is the personification of evil. This idea stands in contrast to its interpretation in the Tarot. The devil, or the scapegoat leads us to temptation. We sin, destroying ourselves. Terrible things befall us. Some believe that life in the material world is separate from God/the Divine. The traditional Devil Tarot card represents that world so it is frightening and repugnant. In contrast, the Thoth Tarot depiction represents sexuality, life force and creative energy.

Shadow

Misuse, darkening or the shadow energy of this card includes fear of natural urges. Also self-destructive behaviors, “fatal attractions” and obsessions, hysteria and paranoia.

Light

Let’s focus on seeing and embracing both the light and shadow sides which comprise our complete Self. That way, we get a much more positive and beneficial use of the energies of this card. Spirit embodied in material form is capable of choice, action and creation. The material world is not the enemy of the spiritual world.

Alchemy

Power colors: indigo, blue-black, black and gray. Also violet, red and brown. These bring Capricorn’s strength, endurance and perseverance to our endeavors.

Power stones: onyx, jet, garnet and opal. Wear these as jewelry or carry them as power stones for confidence and inspiration.

Power metals: lead. A good reminder of what to “get out,” especially in areas where our ego or erroneous beliefs can weigh us down.

Power fragrances: snowdrop, rose, pine, musk and patchouli. Create positive channels for determination and manifestation. Let’s harness this powerful energy toward beneficial goals this week!

Power foods: foods prepared with any of the nightshade family (potatoes, tomatoes, etc.). Thyme, allspice, cayenne, garlic, ginger, pepper, and thistle (artichokes!). Also, teas brewed from valerian and comfrey. All provide the same beneficial effects already described.
