The Eight of Cups: Weekly Tarotcast™ – Free Tarot Reading
5-10-22 through 5-17-22
The Eight of Cups is this week’s Tarotcast card. This is not the cheeriest of the Cup cards. On the positive side, we can leave the past behind. It’s time to walk away from disappointing situations and relationships we’ve outgrown. Other circumstances have reached their natural conclusion. These actions might be painful. But they are necessary for our further development and for moving in a new direction.
The Elements
Water is fluid and conductive. But it also dilutes and distorts. The sign of Pisces embodies mysticism. Saturn’s weight of obligation, karma and responsibility can drag it down into martyrdom.
The Number 8
The Eights of the Minor Arcana organize, reason and communicate. Their energy may lack harmony, but they can restore symmetry and balance. The eights bring justice, karmic balancing or rebalancing, order and structure. They establish limitations and boundaries.
Kabbalah
On the Tree of Life, the Eight of Cups card represents the formula 8. Sephiroth or sphere 8, Hod (Splendor) the sphere of Mercury. This relates to illusions, imbalance and weakness of the Yang or masculine energy. Manifesting in the suit of Cups (Briah). The Creative World. The element of Water and the emotions. Plus, Saturn in Pisces equaling Indolence.
Astrology
The Eight of Cups card represents Saturn in Pisces. It rules from 0 to 10 degrees Pisces, or February 19th through February 28th. So, if your birthday falls on or between those dates, you’ll be feeling this week’s energy even more than the rest of us. Saturn’s heavy, harsh energy in a delicate water sign like Pisces leaves the Fish without much mojo. The Fish haven’t the strength to stand up and fight. And indolence means inclined to be lazy or to resist action.
In real-time astrology, the Sun is transiting Earth-sign Taurus. On May 10th, Mercury retrogrades in Air-sign Gemini. This is one of the signs Mercury rules and therefore its at home here. We may find ourselves taking one step forward and two steps backward during this transit. We may also walk away only to find ourselves turning around and walking back to where we started from.
“Seems to me you don’t wanna talk about it – seems to me you just turn your pretty head and walk away…”
Jupiter enters Fire-sign Aries on May 10th too. This energy wants to take charge and accomplish things. It is “me-first” energy, and sometime “me-only” energy.
This doesn’t play well with the retrograde or the energy of this week’s card. But as a wake-up call it can serve to get us focused on our own needs and that can help us to move forward if we adjust ourselves to a slower, steadier pace.
“Just walk away, Renee – you won’t see me follow you back home. The empty sidewalks on my block are not the same – you’re not to blame…”
On May 16th we have a Full Moon Total Lunar Eclipse in Pisces’ fellow Water-sign, Scorpio. This is an intense, dramatic energy. The focus is letting go and moving on. Releasing old connections and bonds – balancing karma. Conflicts and arguments can flare. Don’t indulge in game-playing for power or control, despite the strong temptation to do so.
“It’s easier to walk away, better off to face the facts. When love holds you up for ransom, walk away and don’t look back…”
Shadow
Misuse, darkening or the shadow energy of the Eight of Cups card includes depression. Also, self-pity, apathy, and at its very worst – suicidal thoughts or tendencies.
Light
Let’s focus on the positive or light side of this energy. It’s there – in the wisdom to let go of what no longer serves our highest good. Often relinquishing control is our only good option. Our reserves of strength allow us to take a fresh look. A breath of fresh air or a drink of fresh water changes things enough for us to regain a positive outlook.
Alchemy
Power colors: indigo, black and blue (for Saturn), violet and white for Pisces.
Power stones: sapphire, emerald and amethyst (for Pisces). Onyx, obsidian, jet and garnet (for Saturn). Wear these as jewelry or carry them as power stones to help us keep our hearts open and our heads held high. They can also help us balance and recharge our batteries.
Power metals: lead (Saturn) and tin (Pisces). Neither is wearable. They are good for reminding us that flexibility can serve us best when we’re under the weight of change.
Power fragrances: heliotrope, carnation, opium poppy (the scent, not the drug). Valerian, comfrey, musk and patchouli. These will soothe and heal us this week. Saturn’s influence in Pisces isn’t the most comfortable energy. Still, let’s make the most of the opportunities it presents.
Power foods: foods prepared with thyme or teas brewed from comfrey or valerian. All provide the same beneficial effects already described.
