The Hermit

The Hermit is this week’s Tarotcast card. The Hermit card shows us that taking a solitary path will aid us in our search for truth. Solitude and being alone don’t have to mean feeling lonely. But we may find that we seek and very much enjoy our own company this week. First, probing our own inner consciousness and exploring our psyches will appeal to us. Second, we find the solutions to our problems through the insights we gain and the discoveries we make. As a result, we’ll have the seeds to sow for a crop of new ideas and fresh directions.

Although the Hermit card indicates withdrawal from current events, this week it also reflects current events. For example, we may retreat from some relationships and our surroundings. This is not due to depression or disinterest, but the energy this week calls us to look within. Through reflection and introspection, we emerge refreshed, renewed and ready for action again.

Kabbalah

On the Tree of Life, The Hermit travels path 20. It joins sephiroth or sphere 4, Chesed (Mercy). The sphere of Jupiter and the rule of law; to sephiroth or sphere 6, Tiphareth (Beauty). Sphere of the Sun; energy in complete and balanced manifestation. Its Hebrew letter is Yod, meaning the hand. It is with our hands that we sow seeds. First, the seeds lie hidden in the ground during the early stages of their development and growth. Second, they sprout and grow. It is also with our hands that we cultivate our gardens. And finally, we harvest their bounty.

Astrology

The Hermit is the zodiacal trump of Virgo, in which Mercury both rules and is exalted. Mercury, the Earth and Sun come together in this card to create the special magic of growing things. The seed placed into the soil undergoes a transformation. It bursts forth into the sunlight to be further nurtured and grow to maturity. Here Mercury (Hermes to the Greeks) shows us his versatility. He is more than a messenger and trickster. He also acts as a guide for the dead crossing over. He is an interpreter and a transformer. He is the patron of boundaries; also, the travelers who navigate them. This applies to both geographical and metaphorical boundaries.

In real-time astrology, the Sun continues its transit of Virgo’s fellow Earth-sign, Capricorn. Venus is retrograde in Capricorn through January 29th. We will re-assess what we value and who we love. This is also not a good time for major financial investments. Take time to review budgets.

During this retrograde cycle, avoid making changes to your appearance. Postpone that new hairdo or cosmetic surgery. Avoid planning parties and social events. But what about the holidays, you may ask? Be prepared to have plans change at the last minute or fall through. Be patient and handle curveballs with grace and diplomacy.

“Here I go again on my own – goin’ down the only road I’ve ever known…
like a drifter I was born to walk alone ‘cause I know what it means to walk along the lonely street of dreams…”

On December 28th Jupiter enters Water-sign Pisces, Virgo’s polar opposite sign. Our spirituality and compassion expand. We are imaginative. We’re willing to give of ourselves. Combined with the energy of this week’s card, we also need time for rest and renewal.

“Number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9…”

Quoted because this is Major Arcana card number 9 – the number which always comes back to itself.

When Mercury enters Air-sign Aquarius on January 2nd we’re receptive to new ideas. We seek knowledge and we’re willing to think outside the box. We embrace originality and innovation.

“Nothing else matters, I don’t care what I miss. Company’s okay, solitude is bliss.”

To sum up, on January 2nd we have a New Moon in Capricorn. Use this energy with that of this week’s card to set practical goals. Focus on self-discipline. Honor your commitments and responsibilities.

Shadow

Misuse, darkening or the shadow energy of the Hermit card includes rigid thinking. Also, hard attitudes. Inflexibility. Bitterness and hostility toward the outside world – even narcissism.

Light

In contrast, let’s focus on emotional maturity. The qualities of wisdom and enlightenment.

Alchemy

Power colors: yellowish green, slate grey, grey-green and plum.

Power stones: onyx, clear crystal and diamonds. Wear as jewelry or carry as power stones. They will make your alone-time or me-time productive, meaningful and instructive.

Power metals: gold and platinum. Pricey yes, but wear ‘em if you’ve got ‘em, because they symbolize the light that is born from darkness.

Power fragrances: lily, valerian, lavender, lilac, and frankincense. These will awaken the introspective and transformative powers of the Hermit.

Power foods: foods prepared with parsley, dill, rosemary, lavender, lemongrass and mace. Tea brewed from peppermint; as well as beverages containing juniper (gin!) and wormwood (absinthe!) – in moderation, please! And all provide the same beneficial effects already described.
